International relations is an interdisciplinary field that investigates the forces that shape our global society. IR majors study issues like global trade and development; peace and security; political, economic and environmental change; and peoples and their cultures. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how these forces interact with each other to shape the world around us, and explore ways they can be leveraged to create positive change.
While realist theories posit that state actors only ever act in their own self-interest, liberalism emphasizes that non-state actors (including individuals, corporations and non-governmental organizations), the media and international institutions like the United Nations play important mediating roles in the international arena. In addition, liberalist theory posits that states will often cooperate to promote peace and stability in the global community.
An international relations degree offers career opportunities in a broad range of areas, including diplomacy, business and non-profit. You’ll learn the skills to work in government, supporting a country’s foreign policy as an ambassador or diplomat; managing cross-border partnerships as a corporate executive; or conducting research and analysis for the private sector.
You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of international law and governance, including international treaties, security and defense, offshore financial activities, international trade regulations and other emerging global issues. And if you’re passionate about international development and sustainability, you can make an even greater impact by working for an NGO or charity. Ultimately, you’ll be able to build an international network of connections and develop your leadership skills that will serve you throughout your career.
